Bergerac Tour: Mystery of the Missing Chalice
with Jersey Uncovered

A private half-day clue trail around eastern Jersey's Bergerac locations, chapels, standing stones and a medieval castle, solving the case of a missing 18th-century chalice.
Jersey Uncovered invites guests to solve the mystery of the missing chalice. The mission is to unravel cryptic clues that lead around the east of the island, visiting well-known Bergerac locations in the footsteps of Jersey's famous television detective, accompanied by a Jersey Uncovered guide and driver.
The Chalice
The finely crafted 18th-century loving cup by Huguenot silversmith Pierre Amiraux was made in Jersey around 1750–1760. The chalice has a flared lip, scroll handles and a body with a raised girdle. The coat of arms of the Labey family of Jersey is set on a circular stepped foot, and the base bears the maker's mark struck once and the initials TLB. It weighs 7.5oz and stands 5.5in (14cm) high.
The Mystery
For the past 260 years the chalice has been on display among the silverware of St Helier Town Church, a gift from the island's wartime Rector. However, the church cleaners, arriving last Saturday armed with silver polish and cloths, discovered that the chalice had mysteriously disappeared. There are no signs of forced entry and the cupboard was securely locked, with keys held only by the Dean of Jersey and the Church Warden.
The Mission
Guests unravel cryptic clues that take them around the east of the island with their Jersey Uncovered guide and driver, visiting Bergerac locations in the footsteps of the famous Jersey detective.
Over the course of the morning, more clues are uncovered at each location, helping guests piece together the story behind the missing chalice. Along the way they learn the backstory of the Amiraux family, who became master silversmiths in the Channel Islands, and discover their modern-day links. At the end of the trail, guests try to reveal the location of the original chalice.
The tour is a half-day adventure across the east of the island, beginning at St Helier Town Church and visiting 10th-century chapels and crypts, ancient standing stones and a medieval castle. It offers entertainment, opportunities for photographs and plenty of local history and mystery.
